Wuying means “a beautiful bride” in the Miao language.

地處廣西柳州市融水苗族自治縣大苗山深處的烏英苗寨

Nestling deep in Damiao Mountain in Rongshui Miao Autonomous County, Liuzhou City, Guangxi,

一寨跨兩省區(qū)

Wuying Village is located on the border betweena province and an autonomous region.

因為土地資源匱乏

Due to scarce land resources,

交通不便

and inconvenient transportation,

曾是當?shù)孛撠毠�堅“最難啃的硬骨頭”

it was once the “toughest challenge” in the local poverty alleviation efforts.

黨的十八大以來

Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China in 2012,

脫貧攻堅的陽光照耀到這里

the rays of poverty alleviation efforts have shone here,

讓這個曾經(jīng)與世隔絕的苗寨發(fā)生了歷史性的巨變

bringing about a historic transformation in this once-isolated Miao village.

黔桂兩地的婦女得以走進夜校課堂

Women from Guizhou and Guangxi have been able to attend a night school

成為一名“大”學生 圓了讀書夢

as “old” students,realizing their dreams of getting education.

Fresh Start: Power of Learning a New Language

我叫梁足英今年50歲了

I am Liang Zuying, 50 years old.

我是土生土長的烏英人

As a native of Wuying Village,

從小說著苗話長大

I grew up speaking the Miao language since childhood.

以前沒有上過夜校班

I had never attended a night school before,

我自己的名字也不會寫

so I could not write my own name,

一句普通話也不會說也聽不懂

nor could I speak or understand Mandarin.

（苗語）馬撲（譯為：不知道）

(Miao language) Ma Pu (I don’t know)

有外地人來到烏英

When non-local people came to Wuying Village,

我也想跟他們交流也沒辦法

I wanted to communicate with them, but there was nothing I could do,

一點都不開心

which made me very unhappy.

我和村里很多婦女就看見朋友了

Like many women in the village, when I saw out-of-town visitors,

都扭頭害羞躲到一邊去

I turned my head away and shyly hid to the side.

我愛人是退伍軍人

My husband is a veteran.

年輕時家里經(jīng)常有他的戰(zhàn)友來小聚

When he was young, his comrades often came to our home for small gatherings.

他們見過世面

They were more worldly and experienced,

聊天的內(nèi)容我聽不懂

and talked about things that I could not understand.

只要聽到他們來我就去房間關起門來

Whenever I heard them coming, I went into my room and shut the door.

以前孩子生病帶去醫(yī)院看病

In the past, when my children got sick and I took them to the hospital,

如果醫(yī)生不會說苗（語）

if the doctor could not speak the Miao language,

我一句普通話都聽不懂

I could hardly understand a single word of Mandarin,

我急得真的想哭

and I was so anxious that I felt like crying.

我就經(jīng)常想如果小時候得讀書了

I often thought if I had been able to go to school as a child,

都不是這樣

this would not have happened.

可是沒有如果

However, there were no “ifs”.

那時候家里太窮了連吃飯都成問題

At that time, my family was so poor that getting enough food to eat was a problem,

不要說讀書了

let alone sending children to school.

那時我孩子才這么高就是現(xiàn)在的那班長梁足英

My child Liang Zuying, who is the class monitor now, just grew about this tall at that time.

她只能夠放�？带喬拓i菜（割豬菜）

She could only help graze cattle, feed ducks, cut and collect chard,

還有帶弟妹

and take care of her younger brothers and sisters.

那時的代課老師一個月是60塊（錢） 才60塊（錢）了

Back then, a substitute teacher earned just 60 yuan a month, only 60 yuan.

我就一個月一個月地借

I borrowed money month by month,

到時候我又還朋友

and then repaid the money to my friends.

解決我的生活可以去上課

This helped me manage my living expenses, so that I could give lessons at school.

只有我的孩子媽（去）生產(chǎn)勞動

Only the children’s mother was doing productive labor,

但是我也想辦法克服（家里的困難）

but I was also finding ways to overcome difficulties.

我7歲的時候

When I was 7 years old,

很想很想去讀書也沒有去成

I had a strong desire to go to school, but that was not fulfilled.

作為家里的老大

As the eldest child in my family,

我從小就幫著父母分擔家務農(nóng)活

I had to help my parents with household chores and farm work from a young age.

有時候有空

Sometimes when I had free time,

我就帶著弟弟妹妹到教室外偷偷聽課

I took my younger brothers and sisters to secretly listen to lessons outside the classroom,

好像自己得讀書了一樣

as if I were actually a student in class.

弟弟梁秀前7歲的時候

When my younger brother Liang Xiuqian turned 7 years old,

家里讓他去讀書了

my family managed to send him to school.

我開心又羨慕

I was happy for, yet also envious of him.

家里面咬牙供他讀到初一

My parents gritted their teeth to support him through the first year of junior high school,

因為經(jīng)濟困難也沒能繼續(xù)供他讀書

but they could not afford to continue his education due to financial difficulties.

He just...

說不來（哽咽）

I can’t continue(choking) ；

說不來

I can’t go on.

好像說這個故事我就真正地跟他哭了一天

It felt like by telling this story, I truly cried with him for a whole day.

（記者）可是弟弟現(xiàn)在也蠻好的呀

(Reporter) But your younger brother is doing quite well now.

是啊……

Yes, that’s how he is now...

我就跟他在家在一起抱他

I stayed with him at home, and put a consoling arm around him.

他就看他朋友背書包去桿洞（烏英苗寨所在鄉(xiāng)鎮(zhèn)）讀書

Seeing his friends carrying their schoolbags and going to school in Gandong Township (the township where Wuying Village is located),

他又哭了

he started crying again.

我也是愛讀書像他一樣的

I also loved studying just like him,

我們兩個就哭

and we ended up crying together.

爸爸和媽媽他們來就怕他們看見

But we did not want our parents to see us crying.

弟弟在家里放羊挑柴挖筍

My younger brother stayed at home grazing goats, carrying firewood on a shoulder pole, and digging bamboo shoots.

干了幾年農(nóng)活

After doing farm work for several years,

1997年選擇走出大山務工

he chose to leave the mountains to find work in 1997.

每個月還給家里寄生活費

He sent living expenses home every month,

承擔起家里的重任

taking on the heavy responsibility of supporting the family.

村里都是窮以前每家都一樣的

In the past, all families in the village were poor.

以前我們一條公路都沒有通

We did not even have a single highway.

最多的就是架在溝溝渠渠和烏英河上的簡陋木橋

Most commonly seen were the shabby wooden bridges built over ditches and the Wuying River.

想去鄉(xiāng)（桿洞鄉(xiāng)）里面就是要走三四多個鐘（小時）

To get to Gandong Township, we had to walk for more than three or four hours.

2008年底

At the end of 2008,

寨子終于通公路了可以直接到桿洞鄉(xiāng)

the village finally had a highway directly connected to Gandong Township.

那一年底

Also at the end of that year,

在外面務工十多年的弟弟

my younger brother, who had been working away from home for more than ten years,

高興地買了一輛摩托車開回來

happily bought a motorcycle and rode it back home,

成為村里第一個有摩托車的人

becoming the first in the village to own a motorcycle.

父親高興地在墻上寫下了

My father joyfully wrote on a wall,

“有車的感覺真好！”

“It feels really great to have a vehicle!”

現(xiàn)在這面墻都還保留著記錄著家里買車的變化

This wall is still preserved today, recording the change of vehicles in my family.

一座兩座三座

One bridge, two bridges, three bridges.

烏嘎河烏英河上新修建的橋越來越多越來越好

More and more new and better bridges have been built over the Wuga River and the Wuying River.

寨子里的羊腸小道也慢慢變成寬敞的水泥路

The narrow paths in the village have also gradually transformed into wide cement roads.

弟弟的摩托車也早就（換）成微型貨車

My younger brother’s motorcycle has long been replaced by a minivan.

開車去桿洞鄉(xiāng)不用一個小時就到了

Now it takes less than an hour to drive to Gandong Township.

沒通路之前都是走路出去的到鄉(xiāng)鎮(zhèn)走了兩個鐘到三個鐘頭（小時）

Before the highway was built, we had to walk for two or three hours to the township.

08年（2008年）我買的摩托車 后面又換了五菱車了

I bought a motorcycle in 2008, and later I replaced it with a Wuling car.

五菱車又換了幾臺

I bought another several Wuling cars,

后面拉東西又搞（換）貨車

and later I replaced them with trucks to transport goods.

那一起下來也換了七八輛車吧

Altogether, I have probably changed vehicles seven or eight times.

雖然橋和路都通了

Although bridges and highways have been built,

但是我去過最遠的地方只是桿洞鄉(xiāng)

the farthest place I have even been to is Gandong Township.

（弟弟）就經(jīng)常說

(My younger brother) often said,

不要聽媽媽的了

You don’t have to always listen to Mom;

你就想去哪就去哪

just go wherever you want to go.

你就經(jīng)常聽媽媽安排這么苦這么累

You’re always following Mom’sarrangements — it’s so hard and tiring.

我經(jīng)常好奇烏英外面是什么樣子

I often wondered what the world outside Wuying Village looked like.

烏英河又會流到哪里

Where did the Wuying River flow to?

可是我不認字不會講普通話

However, since I could neither read nor speak Mandarin,

怎么和外面的人交流呢

how could I communicate with people from the outside?

怎么去到更遠的地方

How could I go to farther places?

有了孩子以后

After my children were born,

我希望他們能夠好好讀書

I hoped that they could study hard,

好好學習普通話

learn Mandarin well,

走出大山

and get out of the mountains,

不用在家里種地

so that they did not have to do farm work at home.

（我們?yōu)跤⒚刻於家�干干凈凈�?/span>

(We need to keep Wuying Village clean every day.)

2020年 我們的寨子終于整體脫貧了

In 2020, the whole village was finally lifted out of poverty.

孩子有書讀

Children can attend school,

看病也方便

villagers have convenient access to medical services,

民族文化越發(fā)亮眼

and ethnic cultures are becoming more splendid.

日子一天比一天好

Life is getting better and better day by day.

在大家的幫扶下

With concerted support,

村里開辦了“（我）教媽媽講普通話”的夜校班

the village opened a night school to teach mothers to speak Mandarin.

只要想學都可以免費去上課

Any mother who wanted to learn Mandarin could attend it for free.

我們到烏英去

When we came to Wuying Village,

我就感覺到我們跟她們交流就有的這種語言障礙

I could feel the communication barrier between us and them.

她們聽不懂普通話

They could not understand Mandarin,

我們也聽不懂這種少數(shù)民族的語言

nor could we understand their ethnic minority language.

所以就想著就用孩子來教媽媽講普通話

So, we thought of having children teach their mothers to speak Mandarin.

就讓孩子們成了媽媽的老師

Children became their mothers’ teachers.

我聽（到）消息就有讀書了

Upon hearing the news that a night school had been opened,

我就跟我丈夫說我要去讀書了

I told my husband that I would attend it.

他就很開心的所有家務他都承包

He was very happy, and did all the household chores for me,

做好好的讓我去讀書

so that I could have time to go to school.

我怕我忘記不會（怎么）說普通話

I was worried that I might forget how to speak Mandarin,

我們一家人都是相互說普通話的

so all of us in the family began to speak Mandarin with each other.

（再苦再累晚上也要上課）

(No matter how hard or tiring we are, we still go to school at night.)

當時我已經(jīng)44歲了

At that time, I was already 44 years old.

很多村里的婦女和我一樣年近半百才能走進課堂

Many women like me in the village were approaching their fifties before they could go to school.

我媽媽70歲

My mother is 70 years old.

我和我媽媽是同桌同學的

We are classmates sharing the same desk.

以前我不讀書我就像八十歲

In the past when I could not study, I felt like I was 80 years old.

現(xiàn)在我讀書

Now that I am studying at school,

我年年十八歲

I feel like I remain an 18-year-old girl every year.

大家都說我們是“大”學生

We are called “old” students,

可是我們這群“大”學生并不容易教

but teaching such a group of “old” students is not easy.

第一堂課只有6個人

There were only six students in the first class.

當被老師點名起來讀的時候

When I was called on by the teacher to read,

我嘗試了很久

I tried for a long time,

汗都流了就是張不開嘴巴

in a sweat, but I just could not open my mouth.

（經(jīng)）過融安融水來到柳城縣這里

The river, passing through Rong’an County and Rongshui Miao Autonomous County to Liucheng County,

和郁江一起匯入黔江

joins the Yujiang River to flow into the Qianjiang River.

我的父親也重新拿起教鞭

My father also returned to the role of a teacher,

用苗語教我們古詩詞

and taught us ancient poetry in the Miao language.

他就說我就看見你和你媽媽

He said, I just see you and your mom.

現(xiàn)在媽媽就70（歲）了 你50歲了

Your mom and you, who are 70 and 50 years old respectively,

一起同學

are classmates now.

我也很開心我不知道累

I’m very happy too, and I don’t feel tired at all.

苗寨是必須要懂苗歌

People in the Miao village should know how to sing Miao songs,

所以我就把那古詩（改）編成苗歌給他們學

so I adapted that ancient poem into a Miao song for them to learn.

好像古詩這句

For example, the line in an ancient poem

“最是人間留不住”

“Nothing in the world can be kept forever”

苗歌來翻譯就是

can be translated into

花在樹上了像我們年輕的時候一樣

“Flowers on the tree are just like us at a young age;”

花離（開）樹上了我們是老了不再年輕了

“when flowers fall from the tree, we become old and no longer young”

是這樣的意思

in a Miao song.

我爸爸是這樣翻譯給我們

That is how my father translated it for us.

只要有課上我覺得比過節(jié)還開心

Whenever I can take classes, I feel happier than celebrating a festival.

我?guī)缀鯖]有缺過課還被選為班長

I have almost never missed a class, and been elected as the class monitor.

學會了普通話

By learning Mandarin,

我不僅聽得懂別人說什么

I have gained the ability to understand what others are saying,

也不再害怕和別人交流

and overcome the fear of communicating with them.

我也走出了大山

I have also been able to step out of the mountains.

更讓我激動的是沿著烏英河流動的方向

What excited me even more was that

2021年11月

in November 2021,

在粵桂協(xié)作資金支持下

with the support of Guangdong-Guangxi cooperation funds,

我和姐妹吳妹富

My sister Wu Meifu and I,

穿著苗族服飾

dressed in Miao ethnic costumes,

去到廣東省湛江市

travelled in the direction of the Wuying River’s flow to Zhanjiang City, Guangdong Province.

這是我第一次看見大海

This was my first time to see the sea.

坐船去到大海深處

As I took a ship out to the depths of the sea,

看著藍藍的天空和海水

I gazed at the blue sky and seawater,

吹著咸咸的海風

and felt the salty sea breeze.

眼前的景象是我以前做夢都夢不到的地方

The sight in front of my eyes was something that I had never dreamed of before.

原來家門口小小的烏英河連著的是大大的海洋

It turns out that the small Wuying River near my home is connected to the big sea.

面向著融入烏英河水的大海

Facing the sea into which the Wuying River was flowing,

我們用聲音模仿蘆笙哼出歡快的曲調(diào)

we imitated the sound of Lusheng with our voices to hum cheerful tunes,

與當?shù)厝耸掷�手一起跳苗族舞�?/span>

and performed the Miao dance hand in hand with the locals.

這一刻我理解了“同飲一江水”的意義

At that moment, I understood the meaning of “drinking from the same river”.

(People of both Zhanjiang City and Rongshui Miao Autonomous County are one family.)

2021年

In 2021,

我們?nèi)ャ~板屯（柳州市融安縣）和大化鎮(zhèn)仁良村（河池市大化瑤族自治縣）

we visited Tongban Hamlet (in Rong’an County, Liuzhou City) and Renliang Village, Dahua Town (in Dahua Yao Autonomous County, Hechi City).

我們?yōu)跤⑷藥�蘆笙去銅板屯

We from Wuying Village brought Lusheng to Tongban Hamlet,

和他們一起吹蘆笙一起跳舞一起唱歌真的很開心

and we had a really enjoyable time playing Lusheng, dancing, and singing together with people there.

有很多仁良村（壯族村莊）和銅板屯（漢族村莊）朋友姐妹們

Many friends and sisters from Renliang Village (a Zhuang village) and Tongban Hamlet (a Han hamlet)

他們看手機認識我了

got to know me through their phones.

第一次見他們我沒有認識他們

Although I did not know them when meeting them for the first time,

我也好開心的他們每一個人都可憐我

I was very happy, as each of them was caring toward me.

看我很瘦

Seeing that I was very thin,

他們就（問）你在家吃什么

they asked, “What do you eat at home?”

他們兩個屯一起來跟我聊聊講故事

People from these two villages came to chat with me, and shared their stories.

今年6月

In this June,

三個村屯在銅板屯舉行了聯(lián)誼活動

the three villages held a friendship-building event in Tongban Hamlet,

共同組建為民族團結(jié)“互嵌式發(fā)展”村屯

and jointly formed an “interwoven development” community for ethnic unity.

我們種下了三棵石榴樹

We planted three pomegranate trees,

相信我們會像石榴籽一樣緊緊抱在一起

symbolizing that we would remain closely united like the seeds of a pomegranate sticking together.

冬去春來四年多來

Over the past four years with seasonal transition from winter to spring,

夜校班舉辦了1000多期

the night school has held more than 1,000 classes,

共有100多位老師給我們上過課

with over 100 teachers giving lessons to us.

現(xiàn)在我可以讀書了不是做夢的是真的了

Now I can go to school. It’s not a dream; it’s real.

近20名和我一樣的婦女長期堅持上課

Nearly 20 women like me have been consistently attending the night school for a long time.

學習讓我變得更有勇氣

Learning has made me more courageous.

通過學習了以后

By attending the night school,

這些婦女也在這個班里面也增進了這種友誼

these women have fostered stronger friendships,

形成了互幫互助積極向上的非常樂觀充滿自信的這種精神風貌

and developed a spirit of mutual help, positivity, optimism, and confidence.

我覺得非常的好

I think this is really great.

Mountains are standing upright.

它是很強大的因為我們女人就能把山推倒

because women have the power to topple mountains.

所以女人的力量在當今社會來說

The power of women in today’s society is described as

我們女性是能頂半邊天的

women being able to hold up half the sky.

所以在座我們所有婦女同胞們都是有力量的

So all the fellow women present are powerful women.

通過讀書我得到了很多機會

I have gained many opportunities through learning.

比如說

2021年 我當上了烏英苗寨婦聯(lián)主席

I was elected chairwoman of the women’s federation of Wuying Village in 2021,

2022年 我當上（獲評）了廣西“最美基層婦聯(lián)干部”

and honored as “the most beautiful women’s federation cadre at the primary level” in Guangxi in 2022.

我學會用智能手機后

After learning how to use a smartphone,

還通過社交軟件

through social apps,

把寨子里的野菜賣到融水縣城的飯店

I can sell wild vegetables grown in the village to restaurants in Rongshui Miao Autonomous County.

年銷售收入從2021年的1000多元

The annual sales income has thus increased from just over 1,000 yuan in 2021

增加到現(xiàn)在的8000多元

to more than 8,000 yuan now.

最近我被聘為寨子里的講解員

Recently, I was hired as a narrator for the village.

寨子里來調(diào)研觀光的人很多

As many people come here for research or sightseeing,

每次都會自豪地和大家介紹

I proudly introduce the village to them each time.

Let me introduce Wuying Village to you.

烏英是苗話

Wuying is a term in the Miao language.

“烏”是“水”的意思 也是“漂亮”的意思

“Wu” means “water” or “beautiful”,

“英”是“新娘子”的意思

and “Ying” means a “bride”.

“烏英”翻譯過來就是“一個美麗的新娘”

Therefore, Wuying can translate as “a beautiful bride”.

在寨子里

In the village,

有一幅畫家畫的《烏英向海圖》

there is a painting called “The Wuying River Flowing into the Sea”,

我們可以清楚地看到烏英河水是如何匯入大海的

on which we can clearly see how the Wuying River flows into the sea.

潯江和桂江匯入西江

The Xunjiang River and the Guijiang River merge into the Xijiang River,

流到廣東

which flows to Guangdong.

廣西85%以上的水匯聚到西江 最后流入大海的

The Xijiang River gathers over 85% of Guangxi’s rivers before finally emptying into the sea.

我總在想

I often think that

烏英河水不斷向前

the Wuying River’s constant flow

融入不同的河流

and convergence into other rivers

不就像我們寨子像我們村民

are just like the interaction, communication, and integration

和其他村寨其他民族的同胞交往交流交融一樣

between villages and people of different ethnic groups.

各個民族只有團結(jié)在一起

Only when all ethnic groups stay united

才能推動中華民族

can we build the Chinese nation

走向包容性更強凝聚力更大的命運共同體

into a more inclusive and cohesive community with a shared future.

我想當一朵小小的浪花

I want to be a small wave,

一路開心地唱著歌努力地向前

singing happily all the way as I strive to move forward.
